This nationwide FHWA study is an important proactive research initiative which enables the design of roadway facilities and shared use paths to meet the operational and safety needs of the increasingly diverse population of users of these facilities. Landis Evans + Partners, formerly Sprinkle Consulting, led a team of experienced researchers in studying the operational characteristics (e.g. lateral operating space, speed, stopping distance, reaction time, acceleration rate, and turning capabilities) of emerging and traditional user groups that utilize various devices and vehicles including inline skates, electric bicycles, recumbent bicycles, tandem bicycles, skateboards, kick scooters, strollers, bicycle trailers, the Segway HT®, wheelchairs, and other assisting devices. The results of this seminal research provide design guidance for the planning, design, operation, and maintenance of roadway facilities, crossings, and multi-use recreational facilities and additionally, provide the basis for numerous design guides, including the upcoming AASHTO Guide for Development of Bicycle Facilities.
