Courtney Campbell Causeway Multi-use Trail Feasibility Study

This project examined options for a connecting pathway adjacent to the Courtney Campbell Causeway across Old Tampa Bay. In addition to carrying a four lane, divided State Highway (also designated as a state scenic byway), the nine-mile long causeway includes frontage roads providing fishing access, scenic turnouts, beaches and other recreational opportunities. The feasibility study proposed pathway designs which safely accommodate bicyclists, pedestrians, and other trail users, while maintaining motor vehicle use of the frontage roads in this very constrained right-of-way. The study also examined options for open water trail crossings adjacent to three separate highway bridges. This multi-use trail project is moving forward with over $24 million in funding and will result in a well-utilized facility with exceptional scenic qualities providing an important link to the extensive regional and statewide network of trails and greenways.
