Northern Virginia Regional Bikeway and Trail System Study

Northern Virginia is a diverse and growing region south and west of Washington, DC. The region’s 2020 Transportation Plan identified the need to expand the existing system of bikeways to promote the use of bicycle travel as an alternative to the automobile. Landis Evans + Partners, formerly Sprinkle Consulting, prepared the regional plan for bikeways and trails in Northern Virginia. Based on the existing jurisdictional plans, the study identified existing and funded bikeways and trails in the region, analyze critical gaps between the facilities, measure latent demand for bicycling and walking and recommend a prioritized regional network of bikeways and trails. Public and jurisdiction outreach is a key component of this Plan. The project includes an actively managed website, well-attended public outreach meetings and work group committees with representatives from all jurisdictions in the Northern Virginia District.
