Southern Maryland Regional Trail and Bikeway Study

Due to its prime location near Washington, DC and its charming mix of rural, agrarian and historic landscapes, Southern Maryland has experienced a 20 year boom in economic development. The resulting increases in traffic have raised concerns for bicycle and pedestrian safety throughout Charles, St. Mary’s and Calvert Counties. Landis Evans + Partners, formerly Sprinkle Consulting, prepared a study for the region that brought together all three counties to discuss regional strategies for linking trails and bikeways. The 12-point Action Plan identifies short, mid and long-term actions for implementing high priority trails in each county, recommends a network of on-road bikeways that will serve tourism and transportation and a comprehensive and coordinated funding strategy. The Plan received praise and was enthusiastically endorsed by the County Commissioners in each county.
